ADRIAN ROWLINS 1996
oil on canvas 171×159
I have painted around 80 portraits using various techniques during the last four decades. In each of them I tried to fulfil my own artistic objectives, plus if required, the sitter’s wish to be portrayed in a truthful way.
Adrian Rawlins was a flamboyant, charismatic writer and performance poet in Melbourne for several decades leading up to the 90’s.
My portrait of Adrian is more expressionistic than my earlier portraits, let’s say from the fifties. At that time I felt the influence of the Italian Renaissance rather strongly.
The subject is painted in the act of reading one of his poems.
