CLANG JUNCTION 1991
oil on canvas 182 x 152cm
A semi-abstract painting
I utilized the contraction and release of energy forms in the centre of the work – a depiction of maximum combustion only just held together in a manner to suggest permanent expansion.
Closed and open forms combine towards this effect. Paint rollers were used to achieve the larger upward movements.
I have always thought of this painting as a visual metaphor for an explosion, but viewers pointed out to me that some parts of the painting conjure up images of tidal waves rolling in from the ocean.
